Will my ADN credits transfer to GCU?

Most of them, usually — but not for the reason you would expect. GCU accepts up to 90 transfer credits toward a bachelor's. The constraint that actually binds an RN is that no more than 84 may be lower-division, and an ADN transcript is almost entirely lower-division.

Why the sub-cap is the real number

An associate degree in nursing is, by design, built from 100 and 200 level coursework. That is not a weakness of the qualification; it is what an associate degree is. But it means the ceiling an RN actually reaches is the 84-credit lower-division limit rather than the 90-credit headline.

The practical result: two nurses given the same "up to ninety credits" answer can end up paying quite different totals, because one holds upper-division credit and the other does not.

The other two limits

  • Residency: the final 30 credits are earned at GCU regardless of what you bring.
  • Alternative credit: ACE or NCCRS recommended coursework and national examinations are capped at 30 credits combined.

The RN-to-BSN route also carries a 36 upper-division credit requirement, which sits alongside the residency rule rather than replacing it.

Get the evaluation before you commit

Everything above is the general rule. What matters is what your transcript is worth against it, and that is a specific answer about specific courses. It moves your timeline and your total more than any other decision in the process.

Common follow-ups

Does GCU accept all ADN credits?

Not necessarily. GCU accepts up to 90 transfer credits toward a bachelor's, but no more than 84 may be lower-division - and an ADN transcript is largely lower-division coursework.

How do I find out exactly what transfers?

Request a transfer credit evaluation before you enrol. It is specific to your transcript and is the single largest variable in both your timeline and your total cost.

Does GCU accept credit from exams or ACE-recommended courses?

Yes, up to a maximum of 30 credits from alternative sources including ACE or NCCRS recommended coursework and national examinations.
