Switching to GCU from another school

Get the evaluation before you withdraw, not after. That single ordering decision is the difference between a smooth switch and losing a term's work. Nurses transferring into GCU routinely carry more usable credit than they expect — but only if they are still enrolled when the transcript is assessed.

Why the order matters so much

Withdrawing first can affect how in-progress coursework appears on your transcript, and an incomplete or withdrawn course is worth less on transfer than a completed one. Ask GCU to evaluate your transcript while your current programme is still live.

What usually transfers well

  • Completed general education and science prerequisites
  • Completed nursing coursework from an accredited institution
  • National examination credit and ACE or NCCRS recommended coursework, capped at 30 credits

What usually does not

Courses in progress, withdrawn courses, and anything from an unaccredited provider. And remember the ceiling: up to 90 credits toward a bachelor's, of which no more than 84 may be lower-division, with the final 30 earned at GCU.

Ask why you are leaving, honestly

If the reason is that a self-paced programme did not give you enough structure, GCU's fixed calendar is a genuine fix. If the reason is that a weekly posting load exhausted you, GCU will be worse, not better. The direction of the switch matters.

Common follow-ups

Can I transfer to GCU from another online nursing school?

Yes, subject to GCU's transfer rules - up to 90 credits toward a bachelor's, no more than 84 of them lower-division, and a final 30 credits earned at GCU.

Should I withdraw before applying to GCU?

No. Request a transfer credit evaluation while you are still enrolled, because in-progress and withdrawn courses are worth less on transfer than completed ones.

Will I lose credits transferring to GCU?

Some loss is normal at any transfer. The size of it depends on how much of your transcript is upper-division and whether courses were completed.
